Sara Jean Monroe (Grant), age 94, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2025, in High Point, North Carolina. Born on May 7, 1930, in Monroe, Louisiana, Sara lived a life marked by unwavering faith, deep love for her family, and a heart devoted to service.

The daughter of Bertie Margaret Thompson and Robert Aquilla Grant, Sara was raised with strong values that would guide her throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her parents and her younger brother, Bobbie Ray Grant; double first cousin Sandra Singleton and her dear husband of 47 years, Jerry Albert Monroe.

Sara began her journey as a devoted wife and mother, dedicating herself wholeheartedly to nurturing her family. Her home was a place of warmth and welcome—a haven where love was abundant and laughter frequent. As her children grew older, Sara extended her nurturing spirit beyond the home by becoming a Head Start, elementary school and English teacher. In the classroom, she brought the same compassion and encouragement that defined her role as a mother.

A woman of deep Christian faith, Sara touched countless lives through her ministry work alongside her beloved husband. Together they served congregations in Louisiana where they were church planters, Arizona where they ministered to Latinos and Native Americans on a reservation, and Kansas where they ministered to Latinos, with steadfast devotion. Her servant’s heart shone brightly in every community they touched—offering comfort, guidance, and joy to those around them.

Sara’s love for music was ever-present in her life. She especially cherished listening to her daughters sing and play piano together. She enjoyed visits from her son Robert, who always knew how to make her laugh. She also found delight in simple pleasures: Chick-fil-A runs with her daughters, savoring a cold Diet Dr. Pepper or indulging in chocolate treats.

Family gatherings were among Sara's greatest joys. She was an extraordinary cook whose New Year’s Day chicken gumbo became a beloved tradition—an expression of love served from the heart. She had a delicious an eggs  la golden rod recipe that was handed down to her that she in turn handed down to her children and grandchildren. Her kitchen was often filled with the aroma of delicious meals and the sound of shared stories.

Those who knew Sara remember her as one of the kindest souls they ever met, including her devoted caregivers at Westchester Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation where she spent her last few years. She had an innate ability to uplift others—never wanting anyone to feel defeated or left out. Her encouraging spirit made everyone feel seen and valued. With a ready ear and a warm sense of humor, she offered comfort and laughter in equal measure.

Sara leaves behind a loving family who will carry forward her legacy of faith and kindness: daughter Sylvia Dilorenzo (Robert Dilorenzo) of Thomasville, NC; daughter Janice Monroe (Tim Echols) of Huddleston, VA; son Robert Monroe (Michelle Monroe) of Cedar Point, NC; grandson David Workman (Jessica Workman) of Lexington, NC; granddaughter Sarah Markland (Dave Markland) of Lynchburg, VA; grandsons Adam Monroe and Keith Monroe of Fayetteville, NC; grandson Pierce Monroe of Cedar Point, NC; great-grandsons Andrew Workman, Nathaniel Workman, Benjamin Workman, Austin Markland, and Owen Markland.

A celebration of Sara’s life will take place at Carolina Memorial Baptist Church, 422 Liberty Dr, Thomasville, NC 27360 on April 27th, 2025, at 2:00pm. It was with great joy that Sara faithfully gave to Samaritan's purse; in lieu of flowers please consider a donation to them in her honor.
