Mary Lou Rutten

January 16, 1942 — October 12, 2022

Mary Lou Rutten, 80, passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2022, with her family by her side.
Born in Carroll, Iowa on January 16, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Josephine and Lawrence Siepker. Mary was always family first, very thoughtful of others, and had a smile that would light up a room. Growing up in rural Iowa, she was one of ten children and was always quick to help around the house and lead by example.

Mary took pride in everything she did in life. She enjoyed bowling, putting together puzzles, playing cards, and cross stitching. She also had a knack for entertaining. From the seasonal decorations and candles to the multiple Christmas trees and delicious food, she always created a warm and inviting place for family and friends to come together. She would frequently review her calendar to make sure she stayed on top of important family events and embraced new technology so she could stay connected to family near and far and hear about everyone’s latest adventure.

Mary had a strong faith and was a member of St. Philip The Apostle Catholic Church. She worked in retail for most of her career and was closely connected to the greeting card industry. She made sure to inspect every card before putting them on the rack and you could guarantee she always had the perfect card for every occasion.

She was always proud to talk about her family anytime she had a chance and would often go through pictures to reflect on the memories and good times. She taught her family what it meant to be selfless and that it was better to give than receive. Mary had a heart of gold and will be greatly missed by the many people she touched during her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gary Rutten, and a son, Tim Rutten. Survivors include sons, Todd Rutten (Teresa) and Troy Rutten (Diana Arena), a daughter, Brandy Rutten Lackey (Chad), daughter-in-law, Dawn Rutten, and nine grandchildren: Dustin, Tyler, Alyssa, Tanner, Ryan, Caitlin, Rome, Jake, and Maddox. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at .
