Maria lnes Mercedes Abad Sarmiento, 98, died Sunday, November 11, 2018 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Born in Ecuador on May 1, 1920, she was a beloved daughter of the late Leopoldo Abad and Virginia Sarmiento. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luis Piedra and children: Fausto Piedra, Arturo Piedra and Melida Piedra and siblings: Delia, Zoila, Amada, Enma, and Miguel Abad and a greatgrandchild, Pablo Parra and a grandchild, Arturo Parra
She was a teacher and loved knitting and gardening. She raised her children and helped raise 5 of her grandchildren. She was a woman of deep faith in the Catholic religion.
Survivors include her children: Fausto Piedra and his wife, Ruth Piedra, Flavio Piedra and his wife Elizabeth Piedra, Lourdes Piedra and a step son, Luis Piedra. She is also survived by a brother, Jaime Abad. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday at Nicholson Funeral Home with Father Thomas Kessler officiating. The family will greet friends following the service.
